As a result of increased globalization and innovations in computer and Internet technology, law firms are changing the way they provide legal services to clients. Firms are changing who they hire to perform legal work (for example, by retaining subcontractors overseas), how they charge for services and fund their operations and cases (for example, by charging flat fees or obtaining money to fund certain types of litigation from hedge funds and other sources), how they communicate with clients and develop business (using social media, internet advertising, and other new technologies), and how they maintain, search for, and produce client files and information (storing data in the “cloud” and using software programs instead of humans to conduct certain types of document searches).

In addition, individual lawyers are changing firms more frequently than ever before. These developments require careful consideration of ethical issues implicating fundamental professional duties, including the duties to maintain client confidences, represent clients zealously, and avoid conflicts of interest. This course will provide an overview of several new business practices and technologies and address the ethical considerations they raise. mindSHIFT will be presenting a session on "Cloud Computing: Benefits and Risks to Your Firm, Your Practice and Your Client" during this one day event.
